What is BMUN?

Berkeley Model United Nations is a student run organization on the UC Berkeley campus dedicated to continuing its six decades of excellence as the world’s premier — and very first — United Nations simulation. Every March, over 1,600 high school students from all over the world come to Berkeley to participate in Berkeley Model United Nations. Entering its 65th session, BMUN’s mission is to spread awareness of international issues and the spirit of diplomacy through UN simulations. We also aim to create an educational experience for high school student, to help them realize their potential in public speaking as well as policy debate. We do this by serving as head chairs on a diverse group of committees in which we help to facilitate delegate education through substantive diplomatic debate.

Why BMUN?

+ A Teaching Conference

As one of the largest conferences in the world with over 1,600 delegates, it is easy for each delegate to get lost in a sea of motions. By extending the BMUN experience beyond the three day conference through the use of position paper feedback, blogs, and other interactive media, we ensure that each delegate receives a unique experience that they can learn from. Through repeated interactions, not only can our chairs get to know each delegate, they can also help delegates develop their ideas to make sure they make the most of their time at Berkeley. As subject matter experts our chairs seek to cultivate a holistic perspective to the topic by sharing their academic research in the form of micro-lectures, inviting professor speakers, and encouraging socratic dialogue among the delegates themselves.

+ On Campus

UC Berkeley is a university open to all fields of research and thinking, it embraces an open forum for all walks of life, all schools of thought, and all opinions. It is this mindset that has led UC Berkeley to win 72 nobel prizes, 20 academy awards, 11 pulitzer prizes, 105 olympic gold medals, and the discovery of 6 elements. BMUN is proud to be apart of this rich tradition and is honored to be able to host our conference on our campus every year. All of our committees and events throughout the conference weekend take place within campus classrooms and venues, allowing delegates to experience the vibrant campus life while debating pressing topics in halls filled with such rich history of changing and influencing the world.

+ Outreach

BMUN's Outreach wing actively assists local high schools in building their Model UN programs through scheduled in-class visits to clubs and classrooms across the Bay Area. Our sessions consist of a wide range of activities, building upon public speaking and research skills as well as advancing knowledge of current affairs. In addition to Outreach sessions, BMUN hosts an annual Delegate Workshop in the Fall, during which delegates participate in a day-long lecture and simulation experience. BMUN is also working hard to build additional services in conference consulting and remote educational opportunities.

+ International

BMUN brings our unique brand of Model UN across the globe to countries like China, Japan, and India. As of 2015, BMUN is proud to have our very own conference in China, BMUN China, where our secretariat is involved from the picking of topics to the chairing experience in Shanghai. Our Global Ambassador Programme in India brings workshops on public speaking and Model UN to schools with novice to advanced MUN experience. BMUN's secretariat is also involved in chairing other international conferences such the Pacific Rim International Model UN in Japan. Looking to the future, BMUN is always looking to bring MUN and our educational mission to students across the globe, making it accessible to all regardless of their background and experience.
